My husband and I have gone here 3 times now and the food is consistently delicious. I lived in Tucson for 4 years and I have seen my fair share of dive Mexican food joints, and this one was reminiscent of the hot summer days I spent in sweltering heat with a smile on my face cause the heat wasn't going to ruin the amazing food I was eating. We followed suit of the Yelpers and ordered the El Pastor tacos and burritos each time we go. I have veered of the path and had a few carne asada tacos, and I kept wishing I stuck with the Pastor. It's spicy, flavorful, simple and so so good. The inside is, as others have said, not the greatest of eating ambiance, but hey, any Mexican food place that pours my Horchata from a bucket wins in my book. Ok, ok, that was one time, but I loved it, it reminded me of Arizona and having my lukewarm Horchata poured over ice from a pitcher. I usually get 3 tacos, my husband gets a burrito and 2 drinks for under 7 dollars, we will keep going back for the price, and the flavor. Don't let the less than appealing building ruin a great experience, and meal.

Ate here for lunch as I was intrigued by the yelp reviews. I had a carnitas taco and al pastor burrito. Taco was solid, burrito tasted good but by the third bite orange grease was running out the back end. Kind of gross, but fairly typical for a taqueria type place. Four stars seems lofty for pretty basic taco cart food. Next time I'll just do tacos and see how it goes. If this was in a real foodie town it would probably be a two star.

I've been going to El Rey for years now and it's a great place to go for tasty food at super cheap prices. When I first started going you could get 3 tacos or a burrito with a drink for $2.50, they now charge $3.50, but it's still dirt cheap. I usually get the tacos or sopes, both are delicious and come with pickled jalapenos, carrots, and radishes. The salsa they make is awesome, it's really tasty and has a nice kick. I wouldn't mind it being a little spicier, though. They have a pretty decent horchata, I usually tend to order that. I'm a tripe kind of guy and the tripas here are very disapponting. They're just too crunchy. Rock hard crunchy, in fact. I like my tripas cooked a little crunchy on the outside, but I want them to be tender in the middle. The al pastor and carne asada are very good, though. The place is a total dive, but I'm okay with that. Some of my favourite places are divey and dirty, like Little World and Julia's. This is a great place to get some food if you're driving around in the Rose Park ghetto and you're hungry and want some tasty cheap food. Actually, I think all of Rose Park is ghetto so come here if you're driving anywhere near 900 West and North Temple.

so far so good. thanks goes to @monica t for recommending the tongue (lengua) tacos. it is a wonderfully tender cut, and flavorful. if you can stand the sight of a little ventricle and the remnants of taste buds, you must try these. AND eat everything on the plate, especially the spicy pickled carrots. because i'm a light weight when it comes to heat, i opted away from the deathly hallows salsa... SO DANG INEXPENSIVE!!! i felt bad about only paying $3.22 for four tacos and a drink! so i gave them a $2 tip.

My second visit to Salt Lake City from Florida....I wanted to visit the little taco place I found on Yelp. Wow just as good and what a value, my wife and I ate full lunch for under $10.00......are you freaking kidding me. Just as delicious and fresh as any 5 star restaurant in a family run atmosphere. Highly recommend!

Excellent meal. Very out of the way and kind of hard to find if you haven't been there before. Feels like a family-owned, very locals-only place with really great food. I had the #5 combo plate with spicy pork that came with a taco, burrito, and sopa. Excellent (pineapple?) salsa on the taco. Fresh creme on the sopa and burrito was the bomb! Total came to $7. Bargain! Next time you're at Red Iguana trying to fill your mexican fix only to discover a 45 minute wait. Drive up the road 3 minutes to Taqueria El Rey De Oros and get a good Mexican plate.

Perhaps one of my favorite taco places in Salt Lake City. The tacos are very inexpensive, but packed with flavor. They also have burritos, half chickens, and other dishes that will not disappoint. I have been going here for 6+ years and it has consistently been great. The food is cheap and good. A taco or burrito combo is less than $3.50. You can not ask for more. The salsa for the tacos is delicious. I really enjoy the al pastor, tongue, and asada. They recently had a remodel which is nice. While other places get much more attention, El Ray De Oros is legit. This is my place for tacos and could soon be yours.

I have admittedly never been here, but Yahoo.com just featured this place in an article titled "33 Best Burritos in America". They said that the burrito al pastor is a must and that the pickled carrots are the best you will ever try.

Awesome taqueria that offers delicious food at crazy cheap prices. The carne asada and al pastor are good with the pork being very popular. There is no salsa bar. Tacos come dressed with salsa, onions and cilantro. The salsa is medium heat. Tacos are .99, burritos $3. Nothing on the menu is over 8 bucks.

After 100+ Check Ins, I guess it is time to write a review of this place. I have tried almost everything on the menu, but I usually rotate between the tacos, sopes, burritos, and tortas. I particularly enjoy the al pastor, carnitas, and lengua. I always get my tacos "with everything" meaning they are topped with salsa, onion, and cilantro. Add a squeeze of lime and a couple radishes and I am good to go. I really love the pickled carrots they serve on the side, although on occasion they serve a batch that is not quite ready (meaning a little crunchy and not pickled all the way through). It is a small complaint though, I would be perfectly happy to sit down with a plate of carrots for lunch. They just updated the interior, so the sea green walls are gone. They did a good job with the remodel, but my boys will miss sitting by the mural painted to look like a fish tank. However, the key for me is the food hasn't changed. You can still get 3 tacos and a Pepsi for $3.50. By the way, the churros make a good "bribe" for picky kids.

Tried this spot this week for the first time and loved it. The al pastor tacos are where it's at. Tons of flavor. You can't beat the prices either. This will be in my regular rotation.

This place just got a fresh remodel and is looking good. You can't beat the deals here. Fast efficient counter service fits the bill for a quick cheap lunch. Taco Taco Tacos all for a dollar. No salsa bar. No frills. Just decent Mexican food. I love the lengua (tongue) taco here. It is the only taco that can taste you back. My coworkers are all too chicken to try it! They don't know what they are missing. They are so flavorful and tender its ridiculous. I also like to get the cabeza (head) tacos. As for the pastor...I have to say that I used to think they were A-OK until I went on pastor walk about of Salt Lake. After going across the street to Diana's and experiencing the best, it became clear to me that El Rey's pastor are just little dried up pastor jerky bits, devoid of any pineapple. Great combo deals here that come with a drink. Surely worth a visit.

This place is a hidden gem as another has stated. for this reason I debated writing a review. The food is good but the prices are great. The food is nothing special -- just solid, true Mexican fare (not TexMex). Where else can you get a burrito, or enchilada, or three tacos -- with any meat -- and a drink for $3.50? My favorite coach-roach taco stands can't beat this. Don't expect anything fancy, just solid food at great prices. and the young lady that took my order was super pleasant and fluently multi-lingual.

There are many taquerias and stands out around 900 W, and I don't know how this rates in comparison, but I believe this is the only place with pictures of a king holding a taco and a butcher's cleaver painted on the front wall. I also know you can get three tacos (or a burrito), a few slices of radish and onion and carrot, and a Pepsi for $2.50 plus tax. Tried the carne asada and the al pastor; the latter was much better, not the very best I've had but full of meaty taste. Quite possibly burritos are better. Maybe one day some brave soul will do a taqueria crawl out this way; until then, this'll be my recommendation for an ultra-budget SLC eat.

My husband convinced me to try this place. It looks scary from the outside but don't judge it for that. The inside is clean and nice. They have a jukebox that plays really loud at random times but it is okay. And the tacos...oh the tacos! I get the carnitas every time and they are authentic and amazing! The sauce they put on them is a little spicy so beware. I've also tried the quesadilla and it is so melty and delicious. It comes with the tomatillo sauce on the side that is also very tasty. It is really fairly priced and you get a lot of food for what you pay. They also have Pepsi products which I appreciate! Lots of parking. Keep coming back over and over and it never disappoints

If you want authentic mexican food, this is the place! The selection of tacos is great. I tried al pastor, carne azada and buche (pork stomach) and they were delicious. They also have the traditional jamaica, orchata and tamarind juices/ drinks. The establisment is clean. And you want you could see the cook in action.

El Rey tends to get a bit overshadowed by its competitor across the street, but don't let that deter you--these guys are pumping out some serious food. I tried three different tacos at a whopping 90 cents each. Carnitas, Asada, and Al Pastor. The carnitas were ok. I've yet to find a carnitas taco in SLC that knocks my socks off. But the asada was delicious, and I'll be sticking with that one in the future. They also have a wide variety of tortas available, and they look tasty. Gonna have to try one of them the next time I venture out.

Cheap. Authentic. Tasty. Filling. I was pleasantly surprised by the authenticity of the food, especially for being so far north! Don't expect anything more than good cheap messy Mexican food. The floors look old, the bathroom was run down (but mostly clean) and the whole restaurant was in sore need of a makeover. That just added to the authenticity. It felt just like a taco stand in Mexico.

Yes, this place probably looks a little scary, but I haven't found better tacos and tortas in town. Prices are dirt cheap, and the food's delicious. I've had a couple of people there take my orders who didn't speak much English, though, so you'll tend to have a better experience at this place if you know a little bit of Spanish. El Rey De Oros is a must-try. I was glad to find out that the restaurant just recently had some major remodeling, they really needed it. The food is great and the price is even better. I've been going here for six years. Holy crap it has been that long! They used to sell 5 tacos and a medium drink for roughly four bucks. That combination is about $5 now, and you still can't beat that any where. Even the nearby taco stands raise their white flag. My favorite is their various tacos; you can choose from fish, lengua, tripas, carnitas, asada, al pastor, cabeza, buche and all of them are amazing. They also serve some bomb burritos, mexican sandwiches, cold seafood soups, and so on. Every time I've been here I've gotten tacos and occasionally I'll get a burrito and they have not failed to satisfy me. The food served here isn't fitting for health freaks but oh so flavorful and yummy! The pickled carrots they got are the best in town. Soft and perfectly seasoned. Their kitchen staffs are super friendly. They have gone through a few cashiers since my first visit and the ones they currently have speaks fluent English which is a plus because I sure as hell suck at Spanish. All in all this place deserves 5 stars from me. Give it a go!

Definitely the spot to hit up! Their food is so cheap but very delicious. From the outside it don't look like much but their food makes up for it so don't be afraid to go inside. I love their carne asada buritos the most!

As a Mexico City native, this restaurant has it all right with the flavors. The asada, pastor, barbacoa, and carnitas tacos were stupendous! The sopes were really great too. If they wouldn't charge for refills and had a salsa bar, they would have received five stars. Highly recommended.

Chungas was my go to place for tacos in Rose Park. It has been for awhile now. But one fateful day, the line for lunch was out the door and I just didn't have the time to wait. I had seen Taqueria El Rey De Oros across the street before but it looks sketchy and closed most of the time. We saw a couple of cars in the lot and decided to give it a try. I couldn't be happier that we did. I got three tacos and a drink for about $3. Say what? Come again? Yeah. Three dollars. What a steal. They could have tasted awful and it would still be a deal. Thankfully, the tacos were amazing! I got two al pastor tacos and one carne asada. Both were delicious but al pastor tends to be my favorite everywhere I go. The meat was tender and spiced just right. The plate was served with spicy pickled carrots. Theirs were not my favorite because they were kind of mushy and I'm a fan of the crunch. But the flavor was great. Let's talk churros. I am a churro connoisseur. I mean, if churros are on the menu, you bet I'm getting one. How can you say no to cinnamon fried goodness? If you can say no, I probably don't trust you. This place has the filled churros, which I often dislike. But yum. We got one of every kind: vanilla, strawberry, and the Mexican cream (perhaps like a dulce de leche?) I was the happiest with my choice, which was the cream one. Crispy on the outside, warm and gooey on the inside. Perfect. We even contemplated getting more churros to go; they were that good. As everyone has mentioned, the ambience is lacking and it's not the cleanest joint but really, who cares when the food is delicious?

Me and my wife went in having read some reviews, ordered way too much the sizes of their dishes are crazy big. Truly enjoyed everything we had especially the ceviche sampler dish with four different ceviches to try it was awesome. I will be back to try some other things!

One day during the rushed lunch hour we went to Chunga's and happened upon a line out the door. We looked around and saw Taqueria El Rey De Oros and after a quick yelp check, decided to be adventurous. The ambiance...wellllll...there really isn't any. It's a little run down, a little dirty, a little scary at first, but don't let that stop you. This is solid Mexican food at super cheap prices. I went super brave and tried the ceviche combo meal. For less than $5 I was treated to two tostadas with heaping piles of ceviche on top. It was great and the type of ceviche I am used to with little chunks of lime-marinated fish, diced tomatoes and cucumbers. I also liked the pickled carrots that came on the plate. They were super homemade and try tasty. Don't say no to the filled churros, even if you feel stuffed. Just trust me and do it.

The restaurant and location are not that attractive but their food makes up for everything else. Right now I will say that their tacos are the best tacos I have try in USA. They have "cabeza" and "lengua" and they are amazing!!!! If you visit this place you need to try the tacos. The quesadilla is also incredible. It is my favorite place to eat tacos.

As a resident of the beloved Rose Park for over 20 years, I have been to El Rey multiple times prior to my Yelping days. When you arrive, it may seem dirty or run down but I'm a firm believer that one should not judge merely by cover and that applies to this location. El Rey offers made to order street style tacos, sopes, tortas, chicken, etc. My favorite is the Al Pastor (Mexico's version of BBQ pork) tacos or burritos. I have never gotten ill from the food here. Mexican food can be rough on the gut sometimes but I definitely have never gotten sick from any of the food I've had. I have been here probably a hundred times and will keep coming back because it's good and cheap.

I live in the neighborhood. Amazing food. The place is a bit run down (you should have seen it before it was remodeled... eek!)... but I don't go there for the atmosphere. I go there to bite into heaven. Every. single. time. Get the carne asada tacos with everything (con todo, gringo!) and you'll personally send me an email and thank me. This place used to be overrun with Mexicans, but someone let the secret out, and you'll see mostly white businessmen in there during lunch. Make sure you show up a little early for lunch, as the line will get long. Also, learn to count in spanish, as you should anyway, and you might miss your number getting called.

Terrible. Where do I start. Well I got the 7 del mar soup and i think they took all the garbage off the last shrimp boat and put it in my soup. the soup had zero flavor and the tortillas were not made there or they have been sitting around. This place is terrible and filthy...

The best thing about this restaurant is the price you pay for the taste you get. It's not clean by any means but the food tastes really good. You have your fly or two buzzing around and the napkin holders could use a wipe now and then. I enjoy a good dive, but to be a dive is not synonymous with being dirty. Hence a rating of three stars rather than four.

I went today and had the three tacos and drink for $2.75. Great deal. Had it with everything on it. I am from Texas so I have tasted Decent Mexican fast food. The food was home-made and fresh. I had the tacos al pasto and they were yummy. Smalish but yummy. I also had the coktel de camaron y pulpo. That was so-so. Too watery for my tastes but it had a nice flavor. Yeah I will go back and try the other stuff

Came back here yesterday for lunch and reconfirmed this is hands down the best and most underrated Mexican food in Salt Lake (and possibly UT). You have to get the $.80 tacos (Beef, Chicken, Pastor and Carnitas) with everything on them - Pastor is the clear winner & may change your life...

[3.5 for food quality and authenticity] Unsure where to go for dinner and just knowing I wanted some Mexican food I headed over the tracks. Contemplating the Red Iguana 2 again or Chungas I decided randomly on the taqueria across the street from Chungas...El Rey. Pretty run down inside and out, I know never to judge a book by its cover. I stood back waiting my turn in line and studied the menu. All the standard fare of a good Taqueria, including Menudo, served on Saturdays and Sundays only. When it was my turn to order I had decided on a small bowl of menudo and an order of re fried beans (to satisfy the craving I had for them) including the drink it came to just under $6. I have found that many places in AZ have come to rely on a quality canned version of menudo instead of making their own and feared that may be the case here. When they called "numero doce" I went up and picked up my order. I was not disappointed. As I walked my bowl of menudo over to the table I could smell that this was fresh! I split the serving of chopped onions with cilantro between the beans and my menudo and squeezed the lime over the menudo. Mmmmm! Very good! The corn tortillas that were served with the menudo were warm and fresh and it was all just what I needed. If you are looking for ambiance and good Mexican food go to the Red Iguana. If you are looking for good home cooked, real authentic Mexican food come here.

Super cheap, and pretty good. The chile (salsa, I guess) is delicious, and there aren't a lot of tquerias anywhere with such a great jukebox. These are the only tacos I've had in SLC, so I don't know how it compares to other place. But for general comparison to other Mexican places throughout the US and Mexico... it was ok. The tacos al pastor were well-seasoned, but the meat was overcooked. The chicken tacos were bland. The onions and cured vegetables were a nice touch. 3 tacos and drink for less than $3 - still a good place to eat cheaply.

These are some of the best tacos I have had outside of Mexico. Seriously. Go straight for the tacos al pastor "con todo" (with everything - diced onion, cliantro and salsa). The tacos are sometimes a tiny bit greasy, but they are sooo good! As others have mentioned, the place may look a little scary but its not at all. Walk in and get some of the most authentic tacos in Salt Lake. There is also a location at about 4500 South State street in Murray. Oh, and this place is cheap! $2.75 for 3 tacos and a soda. Totally worth a trip to try it out even if its a little out of the way.

Cheap, great tacos. Whenever I get a craving for tacos (often), this is the place I think of. Especially the tacos al pastor. Even if the place is pretty sketchy-looking.
